EMP System Overview

About Electromagnetic Pumping: The electromagnetic pump is based upon a linear motor, a principle well developed and widely used throughout industry.

The EMP System
The EMP system provides a highly effective stirring solution for stirring aluminium in a static furnace bath while allowing various scraps and other elemental additions to be loaded in a uniquely efficient way.

The EMP melting system incorporates patented EMP technologies within a closed loop. They are:

The EMP pump and the EMP chargewell.

The EMP System enables operators to enhance their furnace operation by adding additional flexibility.

EMP's engineers are experienced in adapting the system to work reliably and efficiently with any typical reverberatory furnace configuration, and have proven the systems capability for delivering productivity increases in many situations.

The EMP system is illustrated here connected to a simple, single chamber reverberatory furnace.

The EMP pump, installed in the inlet leg from the furnace, pulls aluminium into the patented EMP chargewell where a special and complex vortex flow pattern is created. The aluminium is then returned to the furnace via the return leg.

The powerful flow cycle through the furnace, enhanced by the mixing action of the chargewell ensures the molten contents of the system are quickly and comprehensively mixed. The system contains no moving parts in the aluminium flow, and consequently requires minimal maintenance while achieving high efficiency and reliability.

The phenomenon of magnetic repulsion propels a conductor through a magnetic field. The aluminium acts as the rotor while the coil acts as the stator.

The induced magnetic flux propels the aluminium through the pump tube in the direction dictated by the voltage polarity. By changing this applied voltage, the velocity of flow of aluminium can be increased or decreased.

The principle is inherently simple, but the engineering experience required to make the same principle work in a harsh aluminium casthouse reliably is the result of many years invested by EMP Technologies within a operating cast house over a 5 year period. Research and development into design, construction and materials has made the EMP System the reliable system it is today allowing furnace operators to integrate it into their existing operation (or new operations) and achieve a variety of benefits.
